Let’s get biophysical

The Biochemical Journal Poster Prize at the ComBio2002 Meeting in Sydney, Australia, was won by Wendy Yung (Sydney).

Wendy (pictured) presented a poster entitled 'The PU.1 and GATA-1 interaction: let’s get biophysical' at the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Meeting. Her prize was a whopping Australian $700!
PU.1 and GATA-1 are transcription factors that co-ordinate haematopoiesis (the differentiation of stem cells to form blood cells). PU.1 commits cells to myeloid (bone marrow) lineage, whereas GATA-1 directs them to the erythroid (red cell) lineage. The proteins interact and are antagonistic to each other.
"The C-terminal zinc finger of GATA-1 binds to two sites on PU.1", says Wendy. She has subcloned and expessed these two sites of PU.1 and the zinc finger of GATA-1. Wendy presented work on the interaction between these two proteins, which involved a range of biophysical experiments, including isothermal titration calorimetry, analytical ultracentrifugation and NMR.
