University of Edinburgh, UK

A Biochemical Society Linked Focused Meeting

Proceedings (invited speakers) will be published in Biochemical Society Transactions.

Abstract deadline: to be announced.

Earlybird registration deadline: to be announced.

Oral communication slots are available at this meeting. All attendees, particularly researchers in the early stages of their career, areinvited to submit a poster abstract for consideration as an oral communication.

Student Travel Grants are available for this meeting.

Meeting Background:

This multi-focus meeting on current topics in Signal Transduction will form a landmark in the Centenary Celebrations of the Biochemical Society in 2011 and will therefore represent the major diary event for the majority of British laboratories with an interest in Signalling Research.

The principle aim of this meeting is to sum up the advances in signal transduction research towards the end of the last century and highlight how this continues to pave the way for future advances in biology and medicine. These seminars will therefore reflect the current multi-disciplinary nature of modern Signal Transduction Research and will incorporate discussion of a broad range of experimental approaches, from protein structure, through cell and systems biology to human physiology, and how these new strategies are paving the way for novel therapeutics based on the manipulation of intracellular signalling pathways.

The meeting schedule therefore encapsulates both our current understanding of “traditional” areas of signal transduction research, such as lipid/protein phosphorylation and regulation of cell responses to second messengers (cyclic AMP and calcium), as well as advances in more “contemporary” receptor-activated, molecular processes underlying cell regulation (such as regulation of small G-proteins, ubiquitinylation and SUMOlation of signalling proteins and novel, developmental signalling pathways). The attendee will therefore gain a real insight into our current understanding of modern signal transduction, in terms of regulation of the activity of cell surface receptors to “downstream” targets associated with particular intracellular organelles. Given this scope of topics the target audience will encompass a broad range of researchers at different career stages, including those from both academic and industrial backgrounds.
