MicroRNAs and their targets: promises and pitfalls - A Biochemical Society Workshop

London, UK

A Biochemical Society Workshop

This workshop follows on from a successful series entitled Analytical Tools for the Life Sciences. These workshops bring together life sciences researchers that work at the interface between biology and chemistry with the aim to discuss problems and opportunities and to facilitate collaborations. The programme will feature speakers using a range of techniques and there will be plenty of networking opportunities. All lectures will be suitable for researchers in biology and the wider life sciences and will also be of interest to chemists studying this topic.

Registration
Registration to attend the workshop is FREE of charge. Please note that credit card details need to be provided during the online registration process, and in case of a non attendance or a cancellation made after 18 October 2010, a £15 administration fee will apply.

Early registration deadline: 21 September 2010

Registration is now open.

Note: this workshop has a limited capacity and all delegates are advised to register as soon as possible and before the deadline of 21 September 2010 to secure a place.

Workshop background
During the past decade, new discoveries have identified exciting, unexpected roles for RNA in biological processes, including involvement in various aspects of regulation of gene expression. MicroRNAs and other types of short non-coding RNA molecules are fundamental in cell and organismal development and have been implicated in a number of complex human diseases, such as cancer, arthritis and artherosclerosis. The biological mechanisms involving microRNAs are becoming well understood, although novel findings continue to be made. Importantly, the processes involving these molecules open up opportunities for intervention by novel drugs. However, there has been less progress in maturing chemical and pharmacological opportunities. This workshop will bring together biologists and chemists with the intention to facilitate discussion about techniques that analyse small RNAs and assist development of therapeutic approaches.

During the Workshop the following will be discussed:
- Regulation of gene expression by microRNAs;
- The roles of microRNAs in human development and disease;
- Methods for quantitative analysis of microRNAs;
- Computational and bioinformatics analysis of microRNAs;
- Strategies for delivering microRNA mimics and anti-microRNAs into cells.
