How bugs kill bugs: progress and challenges in bacteriocin research

University of Nottingham, UK

A Biochemical Society Focused Meeting Meeting background This conference will bring together experts in microbial ecology, cell biology, structural biology and molecular biophysics to explore the role bacteriocins play in intermicrobial competition, the molecular mechanisms by which bacteriocins penetrate the formidable defences of bacteria and how bacteriocin import has yielded novel insights into the organization and structural biochemistry of the bacterial cell envelope. Topics: - Role of bacteriocins in bacterial ecology
- Mode of action of bacteriocins
- Mechanisms of bacteriocin import across the cell envelope
- Biotechnological and biomedical applications of bacteriocins
Reviews by the speakers, based on their presentations at this major international meeting, will be published exclusively in Biochemical Society Transactions (Volume 41, part 4). Abstract deadline: 14 May 2012 Abstract submission is now closed. Earlybird registration deadline: 15 June 2012 Registration is now closed. The Biochemical Society Poster Prize was awarded to Grigorios Papadakos for his poster entitled "Kinetic basis for the competitive recruitment of TolB by the intrinsically disordered translocation domain of colicin E9" The Society for General Microbiology Poster Prize was awarded to Carla Brown for her poster entitled "Activity of of S-type pyocins against drug resistant bacterial biofilms" Oral communication slots are available at this meeting. All attendees, particularly researchers in the early stages of their career, are invited to submit a poster abstract for consideration as an oral communication. Continuing Professional Development Approved by the Society of Biology for the purpose of CPD, this event may be counted as 54 CPD credits. Student Bursaries are available for this meeting.
